PRACTICAL GREEN BUILDING
The escalating cost of maintaining the status quo, both economic and
environmental, makes it imperative that a shift in our thinking and our
way of life take place. The world has come to this realization and many
of its’ citizens have the desire to help as best they can.
One of the ways in which we can make a positive global impact on a local
level is by being aware of our options when we are involved in the
building or remodeling of homes. But the amount of information and
advice available can make this seem like an impossible task. With this
thought in mind came the idea of practical green building.
Ideally we would all live in homes that are completely natural, that
have no chemicals or artificial components, that generate more energy
than they consume, that wastes no water, nor pollutes our surroundings.
All materials would be provided locally, creating jobs and reducing
traffic. The structures would have long life spans, would resist mold
and insects, have the structural integrity to resist fire, wind,
earthquakes, and water. They would be warm and comfortable, the place we
want to be with family and friends, our oasis in this busy world.
Very few of us have the time or the means to construct the ideal home.
What we can do is to make the decisions based on what is important in
our life. The options are plentiful. There is an abundance of building
technology available today that can provide all that we need to achieve
our dreams and goals. The objective is to do what is practical in any
situation, based on solid economic, aesthetic, and moral decisions. We
don’t have to do it all, just what we can.
